The Geohost and Legacy portfolio for IGC 2016 is beginning to take shape and gain momentum. Legacy comprises the ability to leave behind something lasting from an event; or from a person or organization directly. This portfolio therefore has the potential to add significantly to the longer lasting impact of IGC 2016 for years to come. It is prudent to ask: what legacy would the LOC of IGC35 like to be known for? How can the impact of IGC35 still resonate in Africa for years after the event? A proposed vision is that IGC35 should leave a legacy of excellence and continuity of advancement within the African geological landscape.
This can be achieved in two main ways - through human capital and geoheritage.
Therefore this portfolio has two distinct focus areas:
“Geohost” is a support scheme that provides financial support to selected young Earth scientists, geoscientists who live and work in low income countries and deserving people who have assisted with the organisation of aspects of the Congress. Funding is therefore required to assist in the support and interested organisations and firms are encouraged to contact the portfolio Chairman (Dr. Jeannette McGill) if they would like their brand to be reflected in the success and ideals of this program. Longer-term, the legacy aspect of Geohost might comprise the formation of a bursary scheme, travel grant scheme and other initiatives. The details of the application process will be made available shortly.
Second, the preservation and continued elevation of “Geoheritage” will also provide a lasting legacy ensuring future generations are also exposed to geology and all aspects of geoheritage. Genevieve Pearson portfolio Chairman and is responsible for co-ordinating this exciting portfolio which already has many interested and enthusiastic stakeholders and participants. A key focus of IGC35 will be in formation of new Geoparks - the details of which will be included in future IGC LOC newsletters. Other initiatives under discussion include printed material and a legacy book.
Comments and ideas are strongly encouraged and will be welcomed by both portfolio leaders:
