| AGID Sub Theme : 1: Ground Water Development for Food Security & Rural Health | The focus of this Symposium is to highlight experiences in groundwater development and management gained through work on projects of providing irrigational supply and/or safe quality drinking water supply from dug wells, bore wells and tube wells, in various hydrogeological, agro-climatic and socio-economic set-ups. During the past four decades groundwater resources, especially those in low-income countries have been developed at a fast pace, often with the help of international funding, to solve the problem of safe drinking water supply in villages and also to provide irrigational water supply to farmers for growing irrigated crops in their tiny farm plots and earn more income. Good governance of groundwater, supply management, demand management, forestation and protection of watersheds with soil & water conservation techniques are the tools necessary to achieve sustainability of groundwater resources. In the past few years, many NGOs have become active in ensuring beneficiary participation to Government sponsored schemes for recharge augmentation. The symposium invites papers on how to manage and conserve ground water resources and how to ensure long-term sustainability of the quality and quantity of ground water available from dug-wells/bore wells and tube wells. The papers presented in this symposium would also provide valuable input to the website www.igcp-grownet.org of the project GROWNET which is designed for global dissemination of ‘Best Practices’ in ground water management in low-income countries.
