Geological Mapping & Mineral Exploration: Case studies from Africa

Over 35% of the world’s global mineral reserves are found in Africa. Most of those mines exploited today were discovered by conventional geological mapping approaches in the sixties and seventies. For the last 10 years in a raw, African is experiencing a mining boom. Whereas in the past, the coverage and publication of traditional geological maps was a process of multiple years of fieldwork, the need to timely attract foreign investment in the mineral resource industry, is seen as demanding an alternative more time-efficient approach. As a result, geological mapping, greatly assisted by various remotely sensed datasets, subsequently validated in the field is slowly gained importance in Africa. This session provides an opportunity for presenting successful geological mapping and mineral exploration case studies from the African continent. Contributors are invited to showcase their own experiences through case study and examples to illustrate the application of remotely sensed datasets in geological mapping and in the exploration for minerals. Successful research or projects that involve interpretation and validation, integration, Geological mapping and  updating, structural mapping, modelling of geological process, geothermal studies, mineral prospectivity, mining impact on the environment, including innovative processing techniques in the extraction of rock outcrops and minerals  are highly encouraged.
